The Wenner-Gren Foundations Support for Outreach and Building Capacity for the Discipline to Thrive:
• Global Initiatives Grant - For Doctorates in Anthropology, Doctorates in Related Fields and Independent Scholars
Each year, the Wenner-Gren Foundation funds a small number of initiatives that meet a need not already addressed by our other programs. Global Initiatives Grants help support innovative projects that benefit the discipline as a whole by creating the conditions for anthropologists to do better work.
Global Initiatives Grants can be as small as $5,000 or as large as $20,000.
The deadline for this program is May 15. The application portal opens 2 months before the deadline.
• Wadsworth Institutional Grant - For Doctorates in Anthropology and Doctorates in Related Fields
The Wadsworth Institutional Grant helps cultivate a culture of grant writing in countries where anthropology is underserved or under threat. Through this grant program, the Foundation works with faculty from an anthropology (or related) department in the Global South to address this inequity.
The selected anthropology department receives $20,000 per year, renewable over the course of 4 years.
The Foundation holds a competition for this award every 4 years. A call for applications will be posted on wennergren.org 6 months in advance of the next deadline.
• SAPIENS Public Fellowship - For Doctorates in Anthropology, Doctorates in Related Fields and Independent Scholars
This program places a recent PhD, in anthropology or a closely aligned discipline, in a 2-year fellowship at SAPIENS, the Foundation’s online magazine. The Fellow gains experience in the work of the magazine, expands their professional network, and receives professional mentoring.
The SAPIENS Public Fellowship comes with a stipend of $50,000 per year.
Application announcements for the next available 2-year SAPIENS Public Fellowship will be posted through the University of Chicago Press.
• SAPIENS Public Scholars Training Fellowship - For Doctoral Students, Doctorates in Anthropology and Independent Scholars
Supported by a 3-year grant from the John Templeton Foundation, the SAPIENS Public Scholars Training Fellowship provides in-depth guidance in public scholarship and communication. Fellows learn how to transform their anthropology research into engaging, thought-provoking stories through accessible writing and podcasting for broad, nonacademic audiences.
In addition to the benefits of deepening skills in popular writing and podcasting, individual mentoring from SAPIENS staff and partners, widening the Fellows’ professional networks, and enabling them to receive public recognition for their research, this program provides a $2,500 award upon completion of the fellowship.
The application deadline is July 15 annually, from 2022 to 2024, and the fellowships begin the September immediately following.
• Historical Archives Program - For Doctorates in Anthropology, Doctorates in Related Fields, Independent Scholars and Others
The Historical Archives Program encourages the preservation of unpublished personal research materials considered of value to the history of anthropology. Grants are offered to assist senior scholars (or their heirs) with the expense of preparing and transferring these materials for archival deposit. Applicants must show evidence that arrangements have been made with an appropriate repository.
The maximum amount of a Historical Archives Program grant is $15,000.
Applications are considered on a rolling deadline, beginning with a preliminary inquiry. Inquiries should be emailed to Mark Mahoney at mmahoney@wennergren.org.
